Equipment

  • 1 large skillet or deep pan for cooking sausage and rice

Ingredients
  

  • 12 oz smoked sausage sliced into rounds
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice uncooked
  • 2 ½ cups chicken broth or beef broth
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ tsp garlic powder optional
  • ¼ tsp black pepper optional
  • chopped parsley for garnish optional

Instructions
 

  • Heat a large skillet or deep pan over medium heat and brown the sliced smoked sausage for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add uncooked rice to the skillet and stir to coat it in the sausage drippings, cooking for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Pour in the broth and bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low and cover to simmer for 18 minutes until the rice is tender.
  • Stir in heavy cream, season with optional garlic powder and black pepper, cook uncovered for 2 more minutes until creamy and heated through.
  • Remove from heat, let sit for a couple of minutes, then garnish with parsley if desired and serve warm.

Notes

  • Add frozen peas or diced bell peppers during last 5 minutes for extra nutrition.
  • Use half-and-half instead of cream for a lighter dish.
  • Top with shredded cheddar cheese for extra flavor.
