- 1 to 1¼ lb chicken thighs or breasts cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 to 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 to 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 to 3 tbsp honey or brown sugar
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 to 2 garlic cloves minced
- 1 tsp grated fresh ginger optional
- ½ tsp Chinese five-spice powder optional
- Sesame seeds for garnish
- Sliced green onions for garnish
Whisk soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey or brown sugar, vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, ginger, and five-spice powder in a bowl to make the marinade.
Add chicken pieces to the marinade and toss to coat evenly. Let marinate for 20 to 30 minutes or longer in the refrigerator.
Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat and add the marinated chicken, reserving the remaining marinade.
Cook chicken until browned and cooked through, about 6 to 8 minutes.
Pour the reserved marinade into the pan and simmer until thickened and glossy, coating the chicken.
Transfer chicken to a serving plate, garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions, and serve warm.
- Adjust sweetness by varying honey or sugar amounts.
- Add chili flakes or sriracha for spicier flavor.
- For charred effect, broil chicken 1-2 minutes after cooking.
- Serve with stir-fried greens or crunchy Asian slaw for balance.
