Equipment

  • 1 bowl for mixing marinade
  • 1 skillet or grill pan for cooking chicken

Ingredients

  • 1 to 1¼ lb chicken thighs or breasts cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 to 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 to 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 to 3 tbsp honey or brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 to 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger optional
  • ½ tsp Chinese five-spice powder optional
  • Sesame seeds for garnish
  • Sliced green onions for garnish

Instructions

  • Whisk soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey or brown sugar, vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, ginger, and five-spice powder in a bowl to make the marinade.
  • Add chicken pieces to the marinade and toss to coat evenly. Let marinate for 20 to 30 minutes or longer in the refrigerator.
  • Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat and add the marinated chicken, reserving the remaining marinade.
  • Cook chicken until browned and cooked through, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  • Pour the reserved marinade into the pan and simmer until thickened and glossy, coating the chicken.
  • Transfer chicken to a serving plate, garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Adjust sweetness by varying honey or sugar amounts.
  • Add chili flakes or sriracha for spicier flavor.
  • For charred effect, broil chicken 1-2 minutes after cooking.
  • Serve with stir-fried greens or crunchy Asian slaw for balance.
